Morinj

Springs and forests

Place with longstanding, rich history written by skilled seamen, participants of numerous sea battles and achievements which helped open new merchant routes

It is said that the archives of the Morinj and Kostanjica principalities have disappeared. Some documents were even used as wrapping paper in town shops. However, Morinj is mentioned as a village in Dalmatia first time in the 14th century.

Legend has it that it was once called Dobro Selo (Good Village), but after the “mora”, i.e. spreading of a great epidemic, it got its present name. During the Venetian rule, many olive groves, vineyards and orchards were planted, in a way that every piece of the land was used well. Smoke bush and laurel were picked; mulberries were planted and silkworms were grown, used in Prcanj’s silk mills. Many households had 100 and more beehives. Weaving devices, the so-called “brda”, were also made, so some parts of the hamlet were called Donji and Gornji Brdari. Wheat and barley were sown, and after the harvest, corn was sown. The whole field of Morinj was sown with corn, and because of the abundant moisture the harvest was always safe and good. Wheat was ground in 20 field mills, where small caravans from Ubli and Krivošije constantly arrived, as well as many boats from all over Boka loaded with grain.

Many buildings and piers in Boka were built with Morinj sand, and almost the entire olive harvest from the coastal villages of Boka was ground in Morinj with water power in oil mills, two of which are still preserved today. The names of the lands “Konopičje” and “Lanište” show that flax and industrial hemp were grown in Morinj, mainly for the needs of Morinj sailing ships.

Morinj is the largest settlement on the western coast of Kotor-Risan Bay. The first Primary School in Boka, still active, is built in 1803. The first library was founded in 1843. Famous seafarers’ family Milinović distinguished itself in the sea battles, but also as cannon constructors. The Church of S. Tryphon dates back to the 14th century, while the Church of St. John the Apostle, built on the hill above the settlement in the 18th century. Morinj boasts a fine gravel beach. However, if you decide to visit a picturesque village of Upper Morinj (480 msl) you will enjoy one of the spectacular views of the bay.
